Choosing Your Finish:
For the strongest contrast and daytime readability, we recommend:
• Black or White lettering
For a more subtle, natural appearance that blends beautifully with
the oak grain, we recommend:
• Dark Brown or unpainted engraving
For improved nighttime visibility, reflective finishes are ideal as
they catch torchlight and vehicle headlights:
• Silver reflective offers maximum visibility
• Black reflective provides the best balance between daytime contrast and nighttime reflectivity
Reflective finishes are especially well suited for roadside signs, entrances, and low-light locations.
Installation and Fixings | Live Edge Signs with Posts
Signs are supplied in sections to help prevent damage during transit. Predrilled fixing points, screws, and oak dowels are included for straightforward assembly.
The two posts are different heights to match the natural live edge of the sign. The inside of each post is marked "L" (Left) or "R" (Right) to ensure they are aligned with the correct side.
Optional 70cm ground spikes are recommended for easier installation and increased longevity. They improve stability, reduce the amount of post buried in the ground, help prevent prolonged contact with wet soil, extend the lifespan of the oak, and make future removal or maintenance easier.
Installation guides and video tutorials are available in our FAQs.
Care and Maintenance | Signage
Each oak sign is carefully finished using an exterior-grade oil of your choice, designed to protect the timber and enhance its natural character.
To maximise the lifespan of your sign, we recommend periodic maintenance depending on its exposure to weather, installation environment and your personal preference of aesthetic finish.
Finish Options:
Danish Oil Finish
• A penetrating oil treatment that nourishes and protects the oak from within.
• Enhances the natural grain and warmth of the oak
• Provides water resistance while maintaining a natural finish
• Allows the timber to breathe and age naturally
• Requires more regular maintenance
• Best suited for customers wanting a traditional, natural wood appearance.
Osmo Exterior Protection (Clear Satin Finish)
• A premium hard wax oil system providing enhanced exterior protection.
• Highly water-repellent and UV resistant
• Helps reduce moisture absorption and weathering
• Creates a durable, breathable protective finish
• Requires less maintenance than traditional oils
• Preserves the natural beauty of the oak with a clear satin finish
• Best suited for customers wanting long-term protection with minimal upkeep.

Sourcing and Sustainability
Each piece is handcrafted from sustainably sourced English oak, carefully selected from local timber suppliers in and around Dartmoor National Park. Chosen for its durability and natural beauty, every piece of oak features its own unique grain, texture, and character.
All products are designed, engraved, assembled, and finished by hand in our Devon workshop using traditional woodworking methods and responsibly sourced materials.
Oak is a natural material that continues to respond to its environment over time. Small cracks, grain movement, colour variation, and slight warping may naturally occur as the timber settles and ages outdoors.
These characteristics are part of the authentic beauty and individuality of handcrafted solid oak, making every piece completely unique.

After Care
About Oak
Wood is a natural material that naturally responds to changes in temperature and humidity by expanding and contracting. While these shifts are typically minor, you may notice small hairline cracks over time—this is a natural characteristic that adds to the wood’s unique charm. Seasonal changes can also cause slight movement in the timber, which is completely normal and expected as part of its aging process.
After Care
Regular care is essential to keep your product in top condition. We recommend treating the wood with Danish oil or a similar timber treatment to nourish and protect it. This helps prevent drying out, discoloration, staining, cracking, and warping, ensuring its longevity and beauty over time.

FAQ's
Can I approve my design before you begin engraving?
Absolutely! We’ll never engrave anything until you’ve confirmed the design. After your order, we’ll email you design options for approval. Feel free to share any preferences, and we’ll refine the design until you’re completely happy. No engraving will take place until you give the final confirmation.
How do I choose my font?
We can engrave nearly any font. We’ll provide a range of font options for you to choose from. If you have a specific font in mind, just mention it in the additional instructions, and we’ll include it. You can also let us know your style preferences, and we’ll tailor the choices accordingly. If you’re unsure, we’ll still provide a variety for you to pick from.
How do I choose the colour for my engraving?
Choosing an engraving colour comes down to both aesthetic preference and how the product will be used.
- White offers the highest contrast, making it ideal for clear visibility.
- Black is a more traditional option that still provides strong contrast.
- Natural / unpainted engravings suit interior and household décor items best, rather than signage.
- Reflective paint has a subtle silver tone and contains light-reflecting pigments, giving it the best visibility at night. This works best with bolder fonts, which will be reflected in the available design options.
You can read more about reflective finishes in our blog post.
If you have a custom colour in mind, please get in touch — we’re always happy to source a specific finish for you.
How do I add a logo or emblem to my order?
Please use the 'Upload Logo/Emblem' option when placing your order so that we can include it in your designs and use the 'Additional Instructions' to let us know how are where you would like it to be included,
Please send your image to If you are not able to upload the image then please email it to info@graindesigns.co.uk.
If your emblem or logo is particularly detailed or intricate, there is a chance it may not translate fully when engraved. In these cases, we recommend emailing it to us before placing your order — we’re happy to review it and provide proofs so you can be confident the final result meets your expectations.
What if I’d like different dimensions or a design that isn’t shown in the listing?
No problem at all — many of our products are made completely to order. Whether you’re looking for different dimensions or have a fully custom design in mind, we’d love to hear your ideas.
You’re welcome to explore our Inspiration page and existing product range for ideas, then get in touch to tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll be happy to help refine your concept and bring it to life.
