We're Hiring!

Woodworking Workshop Assistant

Full Time | Permanent | The Mounts, Near East Allington, South Devon

We're looking for a friendly, enthusiastic Woodworking Workshop Assistant to join our growing team at Grain Designs.

Grain Designs is a small husband-and-wife business specialising in handcrafted solid oak products, from bespoke signage and house signs to gifts and furniture. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, with all of our oak sustainably sourced from Dartmoor, and we take great pride in producing beautiful, high-quality products that are built to last.

Based in our traditional countryside workshop at The Mounts, near East Allington, every day is different. You'll become part of a small, supportive team of four where your ideas are valued, your skills will grow, and you'll have the opportunity to make a real impact as the business continues to expand.

What you'll be doing

No two days are the same, but your role will include:

  • Building a wide range of handcrafted solid oak products.
  • Sanding, finishing and preparing products.
  • Using workshop machinery and power tools.
  • Learning to operate our CNC machine (full training provided).
  • Packing and preparing customer orders.
  • Helping to keep the workshop clean, organised and running smoothly.
  • Assisting with product development and improving workshop processes.
  • Working both independently and alongside the rest of the team.

As your confidence and skills develop, you'll be trusted with more responsibility and encouraged to contribute new ideas.

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has a genuine interest in woodworking and making things.
  • Is practical, hands-on and enjoys solving problems.
  • Has excellent attention to detail and takes pride in producing high-quality work.
  • Is reliable, trustworthy and has a strong work ethic.
  • Is organised and able to use their own initiative.
  • Has a positive attitude and is enjoyable to work alongside.
  • Enjoys working independently as well as part of a small team.
  • Is happy carrying out some repetitive tasks when required.
  • Is comfortable using power tools.
  • Is reasonably fit, as the role involves lifting and moving solid oak products.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence and has reliable transport.

Previous woodworking experience is not essential. We're much more interested in finding someone with the right attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Full training will be provided, including CNC machining, and we'd be delighted to hear from applicants who are just starting their career, including those leaving college.

What we offer

  • Full-time, permanent position (37.5 hours per week).
  • Monday to Friday, 8 hour working days.
  • Competitive hourly pay, dependent on experience.
  • Holiday entitlement.
  • Staff discount.
  • Full training, including CNC machining.
  • Flexible working hours available once your initial training has been completed.
  • A relaxed, supportive workshop with no corporate culture.
  • A collaborative environment where ideas are welcomed and encouraged.
  • Free parking.
  • A beautiful countryside location surrounded by fields and woodland—perfect for lunchtime walks.
  • Genuine opportunities to develop your skills and grow alongside an expanding business.

The successful applicant will begin with a three-month probation period.

Who will thrive here?

The right person will be someone who enjoys doing things properly, takes pride in their work and is keen to continue learning. We value people who are dependable, easy to get along with and genuinely care about the quality of what they produce. As a small team, we spend a lot of time working together, so finding someone who fits our friendly workshop culture is just as important as finding someone with practical skills.

If you're someone who enjoys learning new skills, takes pride in a job well done, and wants to become an important part of a growing business, we'd love to hear from you.

Please email us your CV along with a few paragraphs telling us why you'd like to work with us and why you think you'd be a great fit for the role. We'll then be in touch with successful applicants to arrange an interview.

We look forward to hearing from you!
